Most of us are very particular about our survival and outdoor gear. We carefully select it, maintain it, and keep it organized so we know where to find it when we need it. Most backpacks on the market are not focused on a specific purpose, they can handle many different scenarios - which is great. Problem is, it's hard to keep gear organized so it's easy to access.

The Excursion Gear Organizer series is designed to help us stow our gear and supplies in durable, compartmentalized gear volumes. 

Gear Kits and Volumes

A gear kit or volume is a collection of related gear - we often call them kits. For example, a first aid kit contains first aid supplies only. It makes sense to store other related gear in an organized bag. Examples of gear volumes or kits:

1. First Aid Kit - a collection of first aid supplies and tools like bandages, gauze, tape, and medications.
2. Survival Kit - a collection of survival or emergency gear like multitools, fire starters, flashlights, signaling devices, etc.
3. Shooting Volume - a collection of gear for guns like magazines, ammo, cleaners, gun tools, etc.
4. Camping Volume - a collection of camping gear like tools, fire starters, flashlights, cord, etc.
5. Backpacking Volume - a collection of backpacking gear like camp tools, fire starters, flashlights, cord, etc.
6. Biking Volume - a collection of tools for biking like chain tools, wrenches, spoke tools, etc.
7. Mess Kit - a collection of utinsels and supplies for cooking and dining.

Backpack Organizers - Key Functions

For years we've purchased dozens of MOLLE bags, luggage cubes, makeup bags, pouches, etc. trying to organize and protect our survival and outdoor gear. Common design issues:

1. Cavernous - many pouches and bags are just open spaces and gear bounces around and rubs against other gear. 
2. Loose pockets - many containers have loose pockets and gear falls out.
3. Elastic loops - We hate elastic loops as main straps. Besides the fact they don't fit many items, they lose their elasticity over time and items fall out. We only justify them on the bag spine.

We fixed these issues for small and medium sized gear. 

Gear Organizers

The EPG full size and compact gear organizers feature the following:

1. Large flat pockets - for larger flat gear or supplies
2. Tool pouches with velcro straps - for tools, multitools, flashlights, etc
3. Mesh pockets with loops - for small items
4. Open mesh pockets - for medium size flat gear

1. Small format - to fit backpacks, bags, coat pockets, glove compartments, etc.

Using Gear Organizers

We carry gear kits and first aid kits in our day packs, backpacks, vehicles, etc. To stock them with items we'll lay out the items on a table and sort them by size and shape. Before long, our gear is organized to preference. 

The size of these MOLLE bag organizers is consistent so you can stack them next to each other if needed.

Applications

We use our gear organizers for a number of common applications:

• Hiking - whether we're on a day hike or something bigger, we always carry our essential emergency gear and first aid supplies. I personally use the full size organizer for my gear and the field first aid kit. 
• Emergency Kits - We use multiple gear organizers and the large first aid kit organizer in our bug-out-bags and 72 hour kits. We like to keep everything segregated.
• Backpacking - the duration of the backpacking trip determines which gear we pack. We'll even stow dining utensils in an organizer.
• Auto kits - most cars already have a survival kit with an organizer. We use these organizers for extra gear or first aid.
