The Fiskars hatchet is a great cutting tool for emergency situations. Its polymer handle is light making the chopping swing very efficient.
The axe head shape converts considerable splitting force to the target. It holds an edge well and can be reshaped if the ground or a rock is struck accidentally.
The light weight means it can be carried in a bug-out situation.
Over the years we've tried a number of hatchets with Scout groups, camping outings, splitting, etc. Most hatchets are heavy and the head shape requires heavy swings or light weight but kind of useless toys. The Fiskars hatchet is the perfect combo of weight, balance, and efficiency. We're not sure what the metal is but it holds an edge and is easily sharpened and reshaped if needed.
We saw the rave reviews online and bought one. We tested it out with our Scout group on a number of outings. It works great. They love the weight and splitting capabilites along with the head to handle weight ratios. You can get great momentum in a swing.
We recommend adding this tool to a Stage 2 bug-out-bag or Stage 3 family bin. In an emergency it would help with fire duties, shelter making, close up defense, and more. For the price, the value is fantastic!
This tool can tackle many of the survival priorities. It can help you build shelter, prepare food, administer first aid, prepare fuel for burning, cut cordage, and so much more. It's just the right size to keep its weight minimized while providing the best function.
